In late 1183, Minamoto no Yoritomo (still in Kamakura) is appointed by the Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa as a "barbarian-subduing commander" (shōgun). Water sprayed on his body turns to flames and black smoke that fills the room. The English translation is great. It was famously retold in Japanese prose by historical novelist Eiji Yoshikawa, published in Asahi Weekly in 1950 with the title New Tale of the Heike (Shin Heike Monogatari). There's romance, intrigue, war, murder, dashing heroes, crooked villains and languishing heroines. The Tale of the Heike is often likened to a Japanese Iliad.

Japan`s feudal era is one of my favorite piece of world history, which is the reason I bought and read this book. Kiyomori gives orders to burn the Miidera temple. The title contains the words "love" and "war", but I was very disappointed to find that less than 10% of this "tale" is actual war. (tr The Tale of the Heike, 1975). Here they are merely warriors that are barely tolerated but used in the machinations of nobles, emperors, ministers, and ex-emperors. This is a strange book, and I'm glad there was an historical note at the end to explain why. Why would they release an unfinished work you might ask. I ve read the indonesian version.. well, im a big fans of eiji yoshikawa ever since i read musashi and taiko.. for this story, i would hardly rate this below musashi and taiko.. the story jump from one side to the other and lack of detail of time.. It felt like there were major time skips, the characters were one-sided and hollow, and little explanation of the political state is given. Taira no Tsunemasa visits an island to pray and compose a poem. Strange ghosts appear to Kiyomori (a face, laughter, skulls, ominous dreams). Yoritomo still sends him back to the capital. The people were abused by the nobility, while the armed Buddhist monks terrorized court and commoner alike. Taira no Kiyomori discovers the anti-Taira plot. Taguchi Shigeyoshi from Awa Province in Shikoku betrays the Taira and informs the Minamoto about the boats carrying the main Taira forces in disguise. There he meets with a holy man, Takiguchi Tokiyori.
