Digital.Bodleian is IIIF-compliant, so you can view the manifest for any item, use the item’s UUID to open it in a IIIF viewer such as Mirador or Digirati’s Universal Viewer, and keep pace with future IIIF developments. When the Bodleian Library launched Digital.Bodleian in July last year it had transferred 125,000 items into a single searchable interface and thus began unifying the Bodleian’s many existing digital collections and now has the systems in place to turn that number into millions. The Bodleian’s copy is rare in that it has not been rebound since its initial printing almost 400 years ago, so these images are especially valuable, conveying a sense of the weight, size and condition of the original object. Adding the images and metadata to Digital.Bodleian allowed us to generate a bare-bones IIIF manifest, which included page-level metadata but did not reflect the structure of the plays. We at BDLSS, along with our colleagues in Imaging Services and Special Collections, are hard at work finishing up the digitization stage of the project. Included in IIIF is the ability to address a specific rectangular region of an image with a URL. The desire of the Digital.Bodleian Project was to migrate multiple silos of content – content which had been put online by the Bodleian Library at various times over the previous 15 years – into a single storage architecture, and a single delivery interface so that they could continue to sustainably support delivery of digitised content into the future. The Bodleian Libraries’ vast collections give students direct access to important ideas free from years of mediation, and to authorial processes in their entirety, while new digital tools allow greater space to showcase the lives of ordinary people who may not feature in traditional narrative history.
